Sea of Nectar Location Description

Mare Nectaris, Latin for the Sea of Nectar, is one of 23 Maria formations on the Moon. These types of formations appear as dark areas on the lunar surface when viewed from Earth. Ancient astronomers believed these dark areas were large bodies of water and named them Mare, from the Latin word Maria, which means Seas. These Lunar Maria were actually created by ancient lava flows which occurred on the Lunar surface between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years ago while the Moon was undergoing a period of major volcanic activity. The Sea of Nectar is a large impact basin formed approximately 3.9 billion years ago and filled with lava during the Moon’s volcanic period. The lava in this Sea encompasses an area of approximately 101,000 Km2 (62,760 miles2) and is approximately 1000 meters (3,281 feet) thick.
The Sea of Nectar is located on the southeastern viewing area of the near side of the Moon. The Sea of Tranquility lies to its North and the Sea of Fertility lies to its east, with Montes Pyrenaeus (named after the Pyrenees Mountain Range in southwest Europe) to the West. Several noteworthy craters in, or near the Sea of Nectar are Rosse Crater and Theophilus Crater. Rosse Crater is located in the southern part of this Sea. It is a deep, bright crater named after the Irish Astronomer William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse, who built the largest telescope of his time in 1847. William Parsons used this telescope to catalogue numerous galaxies and his invention remained the largest telescope in existence for the remainder of the 19th century. Theophilus Crater lies to the northwest of the Sea of Nectar. This crater is approximately 4267 meters (14,000 feet) deep. The floor of this crater is mostly flat with a 1400 meter (4,593 foot) mountain at its center. Theophilus Crater was named after Theophilus of Alexandria, a Coptic Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt from 385 to 412.
