Lake of Goodness Location Description
Lacus Bonitatis, Latin for the Lake of Goodness, is a small lunar lake approximately 92 km (57 miles) in diameter, located in the eastern region of the near side Moon. The Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis) is located to the southwest and the Sea of Crisis (Mare Crisium) is located to the southeast of this lake. Like lunar Mare, from the Latin word Maria which means Seas, lunar lakes were created by ancient lava flows and derived their names because they resembled lakes here on Earth. These types of formations appear as dark areas on the lunar surface when viewed from Earth and ancient historians believed these darker areas were actually liquid oceans, bays and lakes, hence the Latin names which reference these features as bodies of water. The volcanic activity that flooded this lake with lava occurred between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years ago, while the Moon was undergoing a period of major volcanic activity.
Several noteworthy formations near the Lake of Goodness are the Montes Taurus to the north (Named after the Taurus Mountains in Turkey), Sinus Amoris (Bay of Love) to the south and the craters Macrobius and Tisserand to the southeast.
