Lake of Perseverance location Description
Lacus Perseverantiae, Latin for the Lake of Perseverance, is a small lunar lake located on the eastern side of the near side Moon. The Sea of Fertility (Mare Fecunditatis) is located to the southwest, Sea of Crisis (Mare Crisium) to the north and the Sea of Waves (Mare Undarum) is to the southeast of this lake. Like lunar Mare, from the Latin word Maria which means Seas, Lunar lakes were created by ancient lava flows and derived their names because they resembled lakes here on Earth. These types of formations appear as dark areas on the lunar surface when viewed from Earth and ancient historians believed these darker areas of the Moon were actually liquid oceans, bays and lakes, hence the Latin names which reference these features as bodies of water. The volcanic activity that flooded this lake with lava, as well as the Lunar Sea in Mare Crisium to its north, occurred between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years ago, while the Moon was undergoing a period of major volcanic activity.
Several noteworthy craters near the Lake of Perseverance are Firmicus Crater, Auzout Crater and van Albada Crater. Firmicus Crater is a nearly circular crater with a dark flat floor located just south of the Lake of Perseverance.
