Lake of Dreams location Description

Lacus Somniorum, Latin for the Lake of Dreams, is the largest of the lunar lakes, measuring approximately 384 Km (239 miles) in diameter, located in the northeastern region of the near side Moon, with the Sea of Serenity (Mare Serenitatis), located to its south. Like lunar Mare, from the Latin word Maria which means Seas, lunar lakes were created by ancient lava flows and derived their names because they resembled lakes here on Earth. These types of formations appear as dark areas on the lunar surface and ancient historians believed these darker areas were actually liquid oceans, bays and lakes, hence the Latin names which reference these features as bodies of water. The volcanic activity that flooded this lake with lava occurred between 3.2 to 3.8 billion years ago, when the Moon was undergoing a period of major volcanic activity.

Several noteworthy formations near the Lake of Dreams are Daniell and Hall Craters to the south and southeast, the massive Posidonius Crater further south, Plana, Mason and Grove Craters to the north and northwest, and Lacus Mortis (Lake of Death) to the far north. The most remarkable crater is Posidonius. Posidonius Crater is 95 Km (59 miles) in diameter and 2.3 Km (7,545 feet) deep. This crater was named after Posidonius of Apameia (135 to 51 BC), who was a Greek polymath, meaning he was gifted in several disciplines; Philosophy, astronomy, politics, geography, history and teaching. Both Luna 21 and Apollo 17 landed near the Lake of Dreams, in the Taurus Mountains, along the eastern border of the Sea of Serenity.
